Writer's comments / notes
- Julio Angel Ortiz
Past Imperfect was my first audio drama for Everlasting Films, and it is a story that I am very, very proud of. My script editor, Thomas Himinez, did a great job of encouraging me and helping through the story, which was rather complex. It figures- for my first "published" story, I chose a storyline based on temporal paradoxes and inverting timelines. No wonder Thomas Himinez retired as script editor after my story. ;-)
- Past Imperfect was originally submitted as a story called Nexus.
- Draxen was written as a male. Due to cast limitations, it was changed to a female for recording, though I didn't know until I heard my advanced copy of Past Imperfect!
- There was some concern during the writing of the later episodes of referring to the anti-time distortion as a rift, because Thomas Himinez wanted to avoid confusion with the then-recent audio drama The Chronic Rift (155).
- The "voice" who speaks to Christine and makes several revelations to the Doctor was originally pitched as being a Time Lord agent, one hidden by the Time Lords as a "message in a bottle" for the Doctor to communicate with. Thomas Himinez nixed this idea.
- When the Doctor arrives on Kirakas and gives his name as "Doctor John Smith" to the computer, the first draft had him give his name as "Doctor Blaise Pascal", but Thomas Himinez changed this to the conventional John Smith.
- I toyed with the idea of making Past Imperfect 6 episodes long, and planned to have Episode 5 end with the shuttle crash landing with the Doctor and Tomen inside of it. Then I realized how similar this was to the end of Episode 3 of The Caves of Androzani and scrapped it. Plus, I realized that I would have to seriously pad Episode 6 to get to the desired ending.
- When I pitched this story, Jeffrey Coburn was the Doctor. It wasn't until midway through the treatment process that word came down that Jym DeNatale was going to be the new Doctor.
